I received a copy from Netgalley.
This is one of those weird books where I didn't like any of the characters much but absolutely loved the plot and the world building. The main character, Lily, a weak and sickly girl was quite bland and annoying even when pulled into a parallel universe, and the guy she connects to, Rowan, was flat and uninteresting. At least to me.
However, the world building in this novel is absolutely incredible. I had never seen fantasy landscape, modern landscape and a mix of history and science woven together so well, and so logical as well. It was just outstanding.
While I didn't like Lily much as a main character, she did grow tremendously as the novel progressed. The last twenty per cent or so of the book was unbelievable. Everything stepped up a notch, the plot, the characters.
Left at one hell of a cliffhanger, I really now can't wait to see what's going to happen next.
So huge thanks to Netgalley and Pan McMillan for approving my request to view the novel. I wound up really enjoying it.
